Healthy communities breastfeed!
The Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington (BCW) is a statewide network of hundreds of individuals and over 20 local community coalitions and partner organizations. Our mission is to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding as vital to the health of our communities. The BCW was founded in 1995 and is a program of WithinReach.
We work to increase initiation, duration and exclusivity rates of breastfeeding through promotion projects, education and resource sharing with the larger aim of establishing breastfeeding as the cultural norm in Washington. Our vision is that Washington state champions breastfeeding as the foundation for lifelong health and wellness. We strive to eliminate all breastfeeding barriers, and to ensure all Washington mothers have equitable access to breastfeeding support and resources. Our work influences mothers and families, communities, organizations, and the larger sociocultural environment, all of which impact breastfeeding.
BCW Statewide Goals:
- Advocate and implement best practices that support breastfeeding within hospitals, birthing facilities, health clinics, workplaces, and childcare facilities.
- Promote and protect a supportive environment for breastfeeding.
- Increase equitable access to lactation services, accurate breastfeeding information, and culturally relevant breastfeeding support.
- Promote success among coalition members by facilitating communication, diverse membership representation, and visibility in local communities.
We welcome interested individuals and organizations to join our breastfeeding promotion efforts. To get involved or to link a new coalition with the BCW, contact Alex Sosa, Breastfeeding Coalition of WA Program Coordinator, (206) 838-8655.
